During the life of an automobile the brake pads wear grooves in the disc, the surface of which departs considerably from the machined surface of a new disc. When a replacement disc pad is fitted a certain running in period must ensue. The discs are manufactured with the outer layer of material, adjacent to the disc, deficient in abrasive particles by some 10 percent compared to the rest of the pad. Running-in time is reduced to a minimum. This varying density is attained in manufacture by exploiting the tendency of the particles to sink during moulding of the disc pads.
|
