(RO)nC6H5-nMe(R = C1-20 hydrocarbyl; n = 1,2) were oxidized by O in the liq. phase in lower satd. fatty acid or anhydride solvent in the presence of sol. Co salts and Br catalysts at 30-200≦̸C to give (RO)nC6H5-nCHO accompanied in some cases by (RO)nC6H5-nCH2OH and / or its ester with the solvent acid. Thus, 3-PhOC6H4Me, AcOH, Ac2O, Co(OAc)2 and LiBr, in a mol ratio of 1:8:2:0.1:0.07, was heated to 119-120≦̸C and oxidized by an air stream for 5hr to give 41% conversion with 16% selectivity to 3-PnOC6H4CHO and 46% to 3-PhOC6H4CH2OAc.
