A 2nd. stage tire building machine includes a main shaft(13) journalled to & projecting from a housing(15), a screw shaft(34) co-extensive and journalled in the main shaft, and a distal sleeve slidably mounted on the shaft with a proximal sleeve telescoped over the distal sleeve and being slidably mounted on the distal sleeve & the shaft. The screw has opposite band thread portions outside the housing, and the shaft has corresponding axial slots. A drive connecting the sleeve ends to the threaded portions to move the sleeves and tire bead engaging flanges on the sleeves in opposite directions. All passanger size tires can be accommodated.
