1275439 Superconductors; cables COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE THOMSON HOUSTONHOTCHKISS BRANDT 13 Oct 1969 [18 Oct 1968] 50204/69 Headings H1A and H1K A superconductor structure comprises a filamentary superconductor surrounded by a metallic sheath secured in substantially line contact to the inside wall of a fluid tight metallic tube through which a cryogenic fluid is passed. As shown, Fig. 2, a superconductor filament 3 which may have a central bore 6 is provided with a sheath 4 of Al, Cu or alloys of Al and Cu and is secured to the inside face of a tube 5 preferably of the same metal as the sheath 4. The structure may be produced by placing the sheathed filament along the centre line of a metallic tape and securing by welding, brazing or fusing and then bending up the edges of the tape to form the tube (which may be round or polygonal &c. in cross-section) surrounding the filament. The edges 7 and 8 of the tape are joined together by welding brazing or cold working. A plurality of filaments surrounded by a single sheath may be utilized instead of a single filament and a plurality of such sheathed filamentary structures may be secured at different circumferential positions to the inside surface of the tube, Fig. 4 (not shown). The superconductor compounds Nb 3 Sn, Nb 3 Al, Nb 3 Au, NbTiV 3 Si and V 3 Ga are mentioned. |
