The steering gear has bearings (14,15) for a steering shaft (3) located in flanged recesses with eccentric adjustment and secured by threaded clamping rings (8,9). The mating faces of the bearings and the recesses have splines to secure the angular setting of the sleeves and hence the alignment of the steering. The splines (13) are machined on the mating faces of the sleeves and are hardened. When the securing rings are tightened, the splines bite into the housing and lock the steering setting. No further adjustments are required. The assembled steering gear is capable of transmitting large torque.
