The valve has a butterfly tilting under the action of a shaft. There is a sealing edge on the butterfly which presses against a seat in the housing. The tilting movement of the butterfly (2) is restricted by a stop (17) in a position in which the axes of the seat face (14) in the housing (18) and of the sealing edge (15) of the butterfly coincide. From this position, further rotation of the shaft (1) causes the butterfly to move axially against the flow direction until the edge forms a complete seal against the face.
