PURPOSE:To produce the title polyvalent metal compound excellent in property of developing color at low temperatures, light resistance, etc., by reacting a specified resin composition with a polyvalent metal salt. CONSTITUTION:A resin composition is obtained by reacting a co-condensation resin obtained by reacting 1mol. of salicylic acid with at least 0.75mol. of a benzyl compound of formula I or II (wherein R1-2 are each a 1-12C alkyl, aralkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl and R3 and R4 are each H or a 1-4C alkyl) in the presence of an acid catalyst with 0.3-20mol. of a benzyl halide of formula III (wherein R5 and R6 are each R1 and X is a halogen) in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst. This composition is reacted with a polyvalent metal salt to obtain a salicylate resin polyvalent metal compound having a weight-average MW of 500-10,000, comprising structural units of formulas IV-XI and containing 5-35mol.% structural units of formula IV, at least 1.085mol.% structural units of at least one of formulas V-VIII and 4-85mol.% structural units of at least one of formulas IX-XI, wherein structural units of formula IV bond through the alpha carbon atoms. of structural units of formulas V-VIII, structural units of formulas V-VII may bond to the alpha carbon atoms. through the benzene rings of these structural units and structural units of formulas IX-XI bond through the alphacarbon atoms. of the benzene rings of structural units of formulas V-VIII. |
