PURPOSE:A brown alga or its extract is added to the feed to promote the growth of silkworms. CONSTITUTION:A brown alga such as sea tangle (Laminaria), wakame seaweed (Undaric), kajime (Ecklonia cave), arame (Eisenia bicyclis), kurome (Ecklonia kurome), mozuku (Nemacystus decipiens), hondawara (Sargassum fulvellum), or the like is dried and made into a powder, or extracted with water or a hydrophilic solvent such as a lower alcohol to give an extract and the powder or the extract is used as the additive. Or the residue after alginic acid extraction also is used. The yield of these extract is 3-10% on the basis of the starting material. The amount of the additive is 0.1-5%, preferably 0.3-3.5%, when the powder is used. When the extract is employed, the amount added corresponds to 0.1-5% of the starting material, that is, 0.003-0.5% as the extract. |
