Face equipment is controlled by a computer 5 using the spatial position of a face conveyor 2 as a reference plane. At a first cut the actual measured values and the actual state values of a winning machine 3 and the face conveyor 2 are compared with desired measured values and desired state values, and control signals are issued taking deviations into account. Corrections of the desired values are performed by the computer in stages. The hardness of the roof 13 and of the floor 12 are detected by probes 610,620 as further operational state values and serve as control parameters in such a manner that the winning machine 3 cuts into the softer adjacent rock in order to produce a sufficiently large face opening in the case of localised disturbances or seam restrictions.
