A summation electrode is used to determine the total concn. of free ions in solns. The electrical potential arising from the electro-chemical contact of this electrode with a test soln. is linearly related to the log. of the sum of the products of the concn. mobility of the total ion soln. according to a Nernst (1864-1941) relation. The ordinate and inclination are constant for a particular summation electrode at a given temp. and pressure. The summation electrode is completely non-selective and does not distinguish between the various free ions of the soln. The summation electrode can consist of a reference electrode (R) in electro-chemical contact with a special soln. (4) via a fluid contact zone. A closure(5) can form a fluid contact zone.
