The spark generator produces or reproduces a sound wave by interaction of an electron flow and air molecules or atoms of gas in which the spark is generated. The current between the generator electrodes is modulated and the thus varied sound wave is amplified by a resonator. Where two carbon electrodes define a spark gap the electron current flow across the electrodes due to the application of a variable voltage interact with air molecules with an energy proportional to the applied voltage. Having defined a correlation between voltage and sound any sound can be produced arbitrarily.
