2-Methoxy- or 2-ethoxy-6-aminobenzamide is obtained from 2,6-dinitrobenzoyl halide. The latter is treated in solution with gaseous NH3, and 2,6-dinitrobenzamide is formed. Reaction with methanol or ethanol in the presence of alkali metal (which is in the form of alkanolate) results in 2-methoxy- or 2-ethoxy-6-nitrobenzamide which is finally reduced to the title compound. It is used mainly for the preparation of lower alkyl 2'-carbamoyl-3'-methoxy(ethoxy)oxanilates which are antiallergics.
