<p>An anchor base is fixed on the sea bed, and holds one end of a flexible pipe. The top end of the flexible pipe is joined by a connector to the platform; and the pipe is used as an anchor, and also to transfer a fluid from the sea bed to the platform. On the platform is at least one cable drum on which a cable, cord or chain is wound. The free, bottom end of the cable is fixed to the lower, male part of the connector. If an object such as an iceberg hits the pipe, the male part of the connector becomes detached, but the cable unwinds from the drum so the pipe is not damaged. After the iceberg has passed, the cable is rewound on the drum so the male part of the connector rejoins the female part. Prevention of damage to the flexible pipe of the latter is hit by an obstacle in the sea; and accurate re-alignment of the two halves of the connector are achieved.</p> |
