Multilobed polyester filaments suitable for draw-false-twist texturing were manufd. by melt spinning at sufficient spinning stress to produce an elongation 62%, a crystallite vol. >=3 × 105 ∦3, and an av. crystallite lateral dimension >= 50∦. Thus, poly(ethylene terephthalate) was extruded at 290≦̸C through 34 spinneret orifices each consisting of 8 slots 0.089mm long and 0.285 mm wide arranged radially about and intersecting at a central point. The extruded filaments were passed downwardly through a 1.5-mm-long quench zone. The solidified filaments were withdrawn from the molten stream, treated with a finish, and wound on a bobbin.
