A metallic melt (11) wets a casting belt (4) revolving over rollers (2, 3) and having a cooling surface (5), to which casting belt is applied a protective and anti-friction layer (25), the melting point of which is lower than that of the melt (11) and which is thus at least partially melted by the latter. At the end of the cooling surface (5), the melt layer (26) solidifying on this liquid layer (35) is separated from the casting belt (4) and taken for further use. Because of its friction-reducing property and its high thermal conductivity, the liquid layer (35) promotes the defect-free formation of the metal band. <IMAGE>
