A method for controlling the idle speed of an internal combustion engine, as well as an internal combustion engine are presented. The method comprises controlling an ignition timing ( u 2 A ) at least partly based on the engine speed (É), and controlling a position ( u 1 ) of a throttle valve (7) at least partly based on the ignition timing ( u 2 A , u 2 D ) . Preferably, the ignition timing ( u 2 A ) is controlled so that it is restricted by at least one ignition timing limit (±), and the position ( u 1 ) of the throttle valve (7) is controlled at least partly based on the ignition timing ( u 2 D ) as not restricted by the at least one ignition timing limit (±).
