<p>The variable-ratio vehicle steering system comprises a rack with teeth in a common plane, sliding in a housing and coupled by track rods to the wheels, and meshing with a pinion on the steering column. The pinion axis is eccentric, with the distance between it and the plane of the rack teeth varying as the steering wheel is turned, while the rack and pinion teeth remain in mesh. The rack (2) slides only in the axial direction, while as the steering wheel is turned the pinion axis (31) is positively guided in a slot (11) at right angles to the rack.</p> |
