Filter press has a granulator or crusher for the filter cakes mounted in a movable carriage or trolley to travel longitudinally below the filter press. In a preferred embodiment, the trolley is moved beneath the press in co-ordination with the successive removal of filters to clear their filter cakes. The trolley may be moved by hand or automatically along support rails or supported on a base of the filter press. The trolley penetrates through a longitudinal opening in this base of the press. The arrangement eliminates the need for a belt conveyor or similar removal system beneath the filter press together with the robust construction needed in such a conveyor to withstand the weight of falling filter cake.
