In coating metallic or non-metallic articles with silicone rubber, an anhydrous silicone rubber soln. having low viscosity is prepd. first with an anhydrous solvent and applied to the cleaned article in one or several layers. The coating is then hardened at room temp., under solvent evaporation and crosslinking of the silicone rubber layer by air-moisture. The prodn. of rigid silicone seals, e.g. cylinder head gaskets for combustion engines, by applying, esp. spraying, a rigid inlay with a silicone elastomer soln. on all sides, is claimed. An adherent coating is obtd. having narrow layer thickness tolerance, also on articles having a complicated shape.
