An apparatus for continuously casting metallic strip material comprising a tundish with a nozzle (24) comprising a slotted element with the slot (30) having substantially uniform cross-sectional dimensions throughout the longitudinal extent thereof. Disposed outside the nozzle (24) is a cooled casting surface (14) movable past the nozzle (24) in a direction substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the slot (30). The slot (30) is defined between first and second lips (32, 34) of the nozzle (24) which have inside surfaces (36,38) facing one another at least at an inner portion of the slot (30). The facing inside surfaces (36,38) diverge from one another at an outer portion (40,42) of the slot (30). The first and second lips (32, 34) are further provided with bottom surfaces (44,46) facing the casting surface (14) at a standoff distance less than 3.048mm (0.120 inch). |
