The accordion mechanism comprises a filler plate (19) carrying a number of voice boxes (12) with reed plates (14) and ports (10), which are arranged in each voice box bottom (11) and are closable by valve discs (8,9) at the ends of spring-loaded (21) levers (5) pivoted (7) to a support (6). The bottoms (11), which are retained in a cut-out (18) in the filler plate (19) and located therein by flanges (16), are sealed relative to (the inside of) this plate (19) by a peripheral seal (17) contained in a groove in the sealing face of the flanges. The voice boxes (11-13) may be integral plastic components connected via tongue and groove joins (15) to form a unit which can be disassembled.
