A battery cathode comprising MoO2 or MoS2 particles coated with MoO2 is made by applying a suspension of finely divided MoS2 in a viscous liquid to a substrate and baking in an oxygen containing atmosphere to convert at least a portion to MoO2. In a modification, the baking is continued to effect complete conversion to MoO3 and the coated substrate is then baked in a reducing atmosphere to convert all MoO3 to MoO2.
