PURPOSE:To prepare magnetic powder of metal-containing iron oxide having improved properties, e.g., coercive force, saturation magnetization, etc., by dispersing magnetic powder of iron oxide into a solution consisting of a specific metal compound dissolved in an organic solvent, followed by heat-treatmenting the dispersion. CONSTITUTION:An inorganic salt, e.g., halogenide, hydroxide, carbonate, sulfate, etc., organic meal salt, complex, etc. of Co, Ni, Mn, Cr, etc. is dissolved in one, two, or more organic solvents selected from the group consisting of fatty acid, oxycarboxylic acid, fatty acid ester and semidrying oil. Powder of iron oxide, e.g., gamma-Fe2O3, Fe3O4, etc. is dispersed in the solution, the dispersion is heated to 150- 300 deg.C and filtered. The prepared powder is washed with ethanol, etc. and dried so that the monomolecular layer of the above-mentioned metal salt is formed on the surface of the particles of iron oxide. Iron oxide as a magnetic recording medium, having improved magnetic properties and a magnetic layer with improved lubricating properties, can be prepared. |
