<p>The seal is of the stuffing-box type and for use between a pump shaft and housing. It comprises a soft packing (4) enclosed in a flexible cage (5). This is evenly pressurised in the radial direction by a free-flowing medium. Packing and cage can be accommodated in a sleeve, and the packing itself can be a preformed cylindrical body, both it and the cage being split in the lengthwise direction. The outside of the cage can be shaped so as to distribute the medium under pressure over it, typically by annular and axial grooves.</p> |
