A portable computer and a control method thereof are provided to reduce electric power consumption of a battery by blocking electric power source supplied into an LED for showing the activation state of a system function, if the electric power for the portable computer is supplied from the battery. A portable computer comprises a display unit(70), a UI creation unit(80), a function display lamp(60), an adapter detecting unit(20) and a control unit(90). The adapter detecting unit detects whether an adapter(15) is connected. If the adapter is not connected, the control unit supplies the power source of the battery into the portable computer, turns off the function display lamp, and controls the UI creation unit to display the activation state on the display unit as a message. A driving unit is comprised to drive the function display lamp.
