A monitoring system for controlling cameras complementarily is provided to monitor the wide area clearly and speedily by means of small number of cameras. Plural cameras(10a,10b) monitor the corresponding monitoring areas and have the pan/tilt/zoom function, respectively. When a camera senses a motion, the camera is stopped by the control of a control unit(30) and the motion is photographed and recorded. A camera adjacent to the camera monitors the area overlapped with the monitoring area by the camera by the control of the control unit so that the entire area of the monitoring area by the cameras is photographed by the link between the cameras. A hard disc drive(40) stores the motion photographed by the record cameras.
