The pump system is used to raise a body of water to a higher level so that it can be used to drive turbines delivering electrical energy as it is allowed to return to its initial level. The motive force for raising the water to the higher level is provided by an explosive gas/air mixture fed to a series of press vessels and with sequential ignition so that the vessels are emptied and the refilled with water in succession. A common riser pipe leads the water discharged from each vessel to a reservoir at a higher level, with the turbine incorporated in the return flow path. The water may be obtained from the sea or a lake with the explosion cycle controlled to give a constant high press inlet flow for the higher level reservoir, to provide an uninterrupted electricity supply. The system is rapidly brought into operation upon failure of the network supply.
|
