This is an addn. to P 2838983, disclosing steel prodn. in a converter, with the addn. of esp. powdered C-contg. fuel and O2 to a melt below bath surface, while a free O2 jet is additionally blown on to bath surface. O2 is now partly charged to the melt in converter through protective medium-surrounded nozzles below bath surface and, in parallel, through a water-cooled fining lance. Simultaneously, O2 is blown on to melt surface through one or more protective medium-surrounded nozzles, situated in converter side-wall lining, at least 2 m above steel bath surface. High yields and low Fe losses can be combined together with low C contents adjustment and low H2-content in steel.
