A method for determining the type of an optical disc is provided to minimize the number of retrying operations for discriminating the type of an inserted optical disc by using a DVD RF peak value. A method for determining the type of an optical disc comprises the steps of detecting a CD RF peak value, a CD FE peak value, a DVD RF peak value and a DVD FE peak value in order to determine the type of an optical disc(S12,S14), and determining if the optical disc is a CD-R or a CD-ROM based on the detected DVD RF peak value(S15,S17). If the detected CD FE peak value is not larger than a CD FE reference value and the detected CD RF peak value is not larger than a CD RF reference value, it is determined that the optical disc is a CD-RW(S16). If the detected CD RF peak value is not larger than the DVD RF peak value and the detected DVD FE peak value is not smaller than a CD reference value, it is determined that the optical disc is a CD-ROM(S18).
