PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem of picture deterioration due to a dark current. SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus comprises: photosensitive cells arranged two-dimensionally and storing signal charges obtained by performing photoelectric conversion of incident light from an object condensed through an optical system; solid state image sensors arranged contiguously to the photosensitive cells and including a section for transferring the signal charges in the vertical direction; an image processing means for forming an image of the signal charges read out by the solid state image sensors in units of frame; a means for detecting smear from the frame image formed by the image processing means; and a means for sweeping and transferring unnecessary charges stored in the vertical transfer section before the signal charges are read out from the photosensitive cells to the vertical transfer section. The sweeping/transferring operation is performed when the smear detection means detects smear otherwise the sweeping/transferring operation is not performed. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
