PURPOSE:To inexpensively obtain activated carbon fiber with superior strength and adsorbing power from coal as starting material by melt spinning depolymerized coal after which the resulting fiber is made infusible and activated with an active gas. CONSTITUTION:Inexpensive coal such as brown coal or lignite is depolymerized in a hydrocarbon solven under pressure of hydrogen, and the undissolved residue and the solvent are removed to inexpensively obtain depolymerized coal having 160-250 deg.C softening point and O/C atomic ratio of <=0.07 in a high yield. This coal is then melt spun, and the resulting fiber is made infusible and activated at 600- 1,000 deg.C for 10-120min in an inert gas atmosphere contg. an active gas for activation to obtain the desired activated carbon fiber. The infusible fiber may be stabilized by calcining at 700-1,200 deg.C in an inert gas atmosphere and activated similarly. |
