The device has an infrared emitter (1) that is arranged in a transparent plant container (3). Infra-red light has wavelength of 700 to 3000 nanometer. An image processing device is attached to a camera (2), and the container has planar or columnar shape. A container base is provided with a set of holes, where the base is covered with a non-swellable material. The container contains a set of blocks made of optically transparent reversible polymer. The blocks are attached to a container wall at different distances and projected deeply into a base column. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining root growth, root characterization and root activity.
