A pulse generator, particularly for pumping a gas laser, comprises a transformer, the primary coil of which is fed with a current via a control switch in such a manner that, when the switch is open, a voltage pulse occurs across the secondary winding of the transformer and is supplied to a capacitor via a diode. A further switch, for example a thyratron or a spark switch, discharges the capacitor and generates the output pulse. To control the energy transferred from the transformer (which can be an autotransformer) to the capacitor, the current supplied to the primary winding of the transformer is monitored and the control switch is opened when this current reaches a predetermined value. The power for driving the other switch is obtained by discharging a capacitor which obtains the stored energy from the primary winding of the transformer via a further diode.
