PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compond useful as a surface active agent, etc., quantitatively and economically, without producing acidic by-products, by the vapor- phase catalytic reaction of hexafluoroacetone with hydrogen in the presence of a nickel catalyst under specific temperature condition. CONSTITUTION:1,1,1,3,3,3,-Hexafluoropropan-2-ol is prepared economically, with long catalytic life, without producing acidic by-products, by the vapor-phase catalytic reaction of hexafluoroacetone with hydrogen in the presence of an inexpensive nickel catalyst under mild temperature condition (i.e. at 30-140 deg.C). The hydrogenation reaction proceeds selectively and almost quantitatively. A wide variety of nickel catalyst can be used as the above catalyst, e.g. the reduced nickel catalyst, the decomposed reduced nickel catalyst, or those supported on active carbon. The amount of the catalyst is pref. 0.1-5pst./1pt. of the hexafluoroacetone used as a raw material. |
