The arrangement is intended for sealing a rigid, partic. a glass, container (13) with the aid of a cover foil (10). The foil is affixed to the annular rim (12) of the container using a heat sealing agent and applying heat and pressure. The foil is first pressed against the inner edge (11) of the rim and retained thereon whilst being heated after which pressure and heat are applied in the outer rim area (28) to produce a complete seal. This latter operation may apply pressure (29) to the annular end face (30) and (31) to the peripheral area (32) on the side of the rim to seal a radially projecting overlap (33) of the foil thereon.
