The deep boring machine for machining the insides of large pipes has a tool carrier (12,34) at opposite ends of a bed (10) sliding along longitudinal guides. Between them are two sliding tool guides (70,72) and at the centre a work holder (18). Each tool carrier has a drive unit and two boring tools (30,32,40,42) so that two pipes can be simultaneously machined, then exchanged for two further pipes. The work holder has a rotating block which supports all four pipes and which is operated to change them over. The four pipes are gripped by the work holder while held at four locations forming the corners of a square and axis of rotation of the holder is at the centre of this square. It rotates inside a ring of rollers, and uses a gripping mechanism operated manually, magnetically or hydraulically. The tool guides combine the flow of cooling and lubricating fluids.
