Exhaust turbine for IC engine - has rotating heat exchanger acting as part of turbine rotor assembly

The IC engine has an exhaust turbine which also functions as a heat recovery unit. Exhaust gas from the engine is supplied through a tangential inlet (1), transfers mechanical energy and heat to turbine blades (4) and leaves through a tangential exhaust pipe (2). The turbine blades (4) are in the form of hollow circular section tubes which are mounted on a rotor assembly. The rotor assembly carries a compressor which supplies air through the centre of the blades (4) where it is heated. The air then expands in a secondary turbine which is also part of the rotor assembly. Power is taken from the rotor shaft.
