The metal halide mass is moved downwards in an upper washing chamber (1) then a lower chamber (3), countercurrentwise to an aqueous solution. In the upper chamber (1) the impurities are dissolved in a fraction of the solution originating from the lower chamber (3) and are then converted into insoluble compounds which migrate towards the lower chamber (3); another fraction of the solution entrains these insoluble compounds towards a third chamber (5) where they flocculate and then settle towards the lower chamber (3).
