An audio signal recording system for rotating head type video tape recorders in which depending upon the purposes of recording or upon recording modes, either of two audio signal recording modes is selected in such a way that at least a part of the audio signal recording band may be used in common by both recording modes and subsequently both recording modes may be compatible and the recording density of a magnetic recording medium may be increased.
