According to an embodiment of the present invention, a method for recognizing a vehicle license plate by using a device for recognizing the vehicle license plate comprises: a step of receiving an image of a moving vehicle, which is generated by a camera; a step of extracting a license plate area of the vehicle from the received image; a step of estimating sharpness of character blobs included in the extracted license plate area; a step of sharpening the character blobs by applying a sharpness algorithm to the license plate area, when the estimated sharpness is lower than reference sharpness; and a step of recognizing each character relevant to each of the character blobs. The present invention provides the method for recognizing a vehicle license plate capable of improving performance to recognize vehicle license plates having various resolutions.
