USE OF ARGON TO PREPARE LOW-CARBON STEEL BY THE BASIC OXYGEN PROCESS

A low-nitrogen steel is manufd. by introducing a nitrogen-free fluid into the converter before the nitrogen-content has reached its min. adjusting the flow of the fluid so that the total rate of evolution of waste gases is kept at a value at least equal to that which would have been achieved in the absence of the fluid at the moment of refining where the N2- content of the melt reaches its min. The nitrogen-free fluid is injected for the remainder of the O2 blow. Low N2, low C steels are produced (>0.1% C and >0.005% N) N2 pick-up is prevented.
