Combustible material, water, and oxygen containing gas is introduced into the reactor(10); the heat of combustion in the reactor sufficient to evaporate the water. The quantity of water fed to the reactor is controlled for maintaining the liquid level in the reactor. Gas & water vapour discharging from the reactor is passed through a turbine(28) to produce mechanical power. Air supplied to the reactor is controlled to be insufficient to oxidise all of the fuel supplied to the reactor, or alternately. The enriched stream is subjected to vapour phase oxidation of a superheated stream to increase the efficiency of the power producing cycle.
