The melt extrusion of poly(2-pyrrolidone) fibers is improved by the addn. of an alkyl epoxide(I; R = H, alkyl, epoxyalkyl; R1 = alkyl, polyalkylene, epoxyalkyl, epoxypolyalkyl oxide, alkylester, epoxyalkylester, hydroxyalkyl, hydroxyalkylester). Thus, the addn. of 0.3% epoxide soybean oil to poly(2-pyrrolidone) produced a 22% decrease in wt. loss at 269≦̸C. The polymer compn. could be extruded at 260-280≦̸C without breaks, dripping, or bubbles using ordinary com. spinning equipment.
