PROCESS FOR PURIFICATION OF CRUDE RESORCINOL

The invention is a process for purifying crude resorcinol derived from an acid cleavage product of m-diisopropyl benzene dihydroperoxide and containing impurities having higher boiling points than resorcinol. The process involves recrystallizing the crude resorcinol from a mixed solvent consisting of (a) about 0.5 to about 5 times the weight of resorcinol of an aromatic hydrocarbon which contains 6 to 10 carbon atoms and is liquid at 20.degree.C, and (b) about 0.1 to about 0.7 times the weight of resorcinol of at least one compound selected from the group consisting of alkyl phenols having a C1-C4 alkyl group and acyl phenols derived from C2-C4 aliphatic monocarboxylic acids.
