In a machine for counting of sheets that are held in the form of a bundle and in which the sheets are turned over in order, wherein the machine has the ability to separate deviant sheets which are mixed in with the bundle of sheets of the correct kind that is being counted, the possibility of detecting double/multiple sheets is achieved. In the arrangement according to the invention, light is projected against a predetermined end portion of the sheet as it is being turned over. Optoelectrical transducers receive light coming from the light impinging on the end portion of the sheet and put out an electrical output signal corresponding to the light received by the transducer.
