Solvent compsn. comprises 1,1,1-trichloroethane (I) stabilised by a dissolved mixt. of (A) tert. butanol (II) at 3-87 (35-80)%, nitromethane (III) at 3-84 (10-62)%, and 1- or 2-nitropropane at 3-50 (3-34)%, or (B) (II) at 15-90 (45-90)%, (III) at 1-84 (1-54)% and nitroethane at 1-74 (1-49)%. All % are molar. Pref. the mixt. of additives is 0.3-1.5 (0.6-1.2) moles per l. Also new are concentrates contg. an excess of the stabilisers and intended for dilution with (I). The compsn. can contain other stabilisers.. These compsns. are used for cleaning metal or other articles by exposure to the solvent vapour. The additives inhibit decomposition of (I) by the metal and are more effective, in both liq. or vapour phase, when used together than either stabiliser used alone. The stabilised solvent also does not react with flaked aluminium. |
