Catalyst for alkylating an aromatic hydrocarbon is obtained by fitting on aluminium bed upon inactive particles, moulded bed, in a reactor; and reacting a granular Al metal with alkylbenzene and gaseous hydrogen chloride at 20-120 degrees C and under a pressure of 0.1-0.5 atms. whereby catalyst of formula (R)n-C6H6-n.2 Al.Cl3.HCl is prepared (where n is 1-6 and R is 1-6 degrees C alkyl). Such catalyst is used for producing ethylbenzene or isopropylbenzene by alkylating benzene. Ethylbenzene is a raw material for producing styrene and styrene resins. Generally alkylbenzene is used for producing alkylbenzene-sulphonate salt as a raw material for synthetic detergents. |
