In this apparatus, the conveying means (1) supports mutually spaced dogs (2) for the material to be conveyed, and the track of the idle strand has at least one kink at which it is necessary for the idle strand to be supported on its supporting side; to this end, a ring of support members (3) arranged at a mutual angular distance is provided, which can be rotated in the direction of movement of the idle strand, in the manner of a deflection roller. For automatic adjustment of the apparatus to different dog divisions and avoidance of the danger of jamming, the support members (3) are arranged at the ends of beams (4) mounted to oscillate about the axis of rotation (5) of the ring and, for their part, are pivotably mounted relative thereto in an approximately radial direction. <IMAGE>
