A paper feed and cutting mechanism includes a sensing facility to detect faults in the paper. A control circuit utilises the sensor output to operate an ejector to remove the faulty sheets. Paper (22) is fed continuously past an optical sensing station (20) that detects tears or imperfections. A further station includes a rotating guillotine (19) that produces single sheets (23) that pass through an efect station (21). The paper is fed into the guillotine at a velocity (VB) that is slightly less than that of which they leave the guillotine (Ve). A control circuit identifies sensor outputs that indicate the eject point and times the operation of the ejector.
