The mechanism for longitudinal adjustment of a car seat incorporates a safety feature which locks an improperly locked seat in the event of the seat tending to slide forward in an accident. The mechanism is used where the seat belt is anchored on the seat frame. The seat frame mounted handle (38) and shaft (36) operates a spring-loaded plate, the rectangular apertures (50) of which form three locking pieces (42) which fit between the teeth of the floor mounted rack (12). These teeth are alternately long and short. A static plate with a zig-zag upper edge (60) brings the locking mechanism into engagement between two adjacent long teeth should the seat start to move forward.
